Why your vocals sit behind the beat — and the EQ + saturation chain that fixes it

Five hours, in person, on the Sony C800G + Neve 1073SPX + Tube Tech CL1B chain. Three techniques deep, then a critique round on your stems.

What you walk away with
  • A repeatable EQ + saturation chain for vocals that compete with modern beats
  • Hands-on time on the same chain we track A-list sessions on
  • Personalized feedback on a mix you bring in (stems-ready DAW project)
  • Written notes + the reference settings used in every demo
What to bring
  • Stems-ready DAW project (4-8 tracks — Logic, Pro Tools, Ableton, FL all welcome)
  • Your own headphones (optional — studio monitors provided)
  • Reference tracks you want your mix to sound like (3-5 songs)
  • An open mind. Bring questions — we'll get to them in the Q&A break.
The 5 hours

What the day actually looks like.

Published in full so you know what you're paying for. No mystery, no padding.

1:00 – 1:15 PM
Welcome + set the chain

Intros, fast tour of the room, walk through the signal chain we're working on (Sony C800G → Neve 1073SPX → Tube Tech CL1B → UAD Apollo x8).

1:15 – 2:30 PM
Technique 1 — EQ subtraction before EQ addition

Why most vocals fight the beat. Cut-first workflow. Live demo + your turn on the console.

2:30 – 3:30 PM
Technique 2 — Saturation as glue

The tube character of the CL1B + tape emulation on the bus. Where in the chain it sits and what it actually does.

3:30 – 4:00 PM
Break + Q&A

Stretch, refills, open questions. Bring the things you've been stuck on.

4:00 – 5:00 PM
Technique 3 — Vocal placement against the kick + 808

Frequency carving against the low-end so the vocal feels on top, not behind. Reference tracks before/after.

5:00 – 6:00 PM
Attendee critique round

Bring your stems. We'll run the chain on your mix in front of the room. Direct, specific feedback.

Common questions

FAQ

What skill level is this for?
Intermediate. You should already know your way around your DAW (Logic, Pro Tools, Ableton, FL — any modern DAW works) and have mixed at least a few of your own songs. We move fast; we're not teaching beginner mouse-clicks.
What DAW should I bring?
Whatever you already use. We run Logic Pro in the room for demos. Your stems-ready project file just needs to export cleanly — bring the session on a thumb drive or have a cloud link ready.
Can I just observe without bringing a project?
Yes — you'll still get the three technique deep-dives and Q&A. You'll miss the critique round value, but the chain breakdowns alone are worth the seat.
Is parking free?
Yes. Free on-site parking at 675 Garyray Dr, North York. Plenty of street parking too.
Do I need to bring my own headphones?
Optional — we have studio monitors and a couple of pro reference cans in the room. If you mix on your own headphones, bring them. Mix decisions translate better when you're using gear you know.
What if I can't make the date but want the next one?
Join the Insider List. We announce the next session there first, and Insider members get the 20% early-bird rate.
